A 30yr old woman attended our clinic with concerns she is getting bunions on her big toes.
The big toes were turning inwards towards her 2nd toes and there was a visible bump at her big toe joints.
The reason why she was getting bunions (hallux abducto valgus) was hereditary and they were being worsened by exercise and footwear.
Feet that are not in alignment place pressure on the inside of the knees, inside of the ankles and excess pressure on the big toe joints. Excess pressure therefore causes joint, bone and tendon changes which can not be fixed- they can only be prevented from getting worse.
The woman purchased custom kinetic orthotics which put her foot bones in the best biomechanical alignment, which also alleviated some knee and lower back pain.
The orthotics were like a stable foundation of a house, now the feet are stable, the knees and hips are stable and in their best alignment to prevent osteoarthritis and joint issues in the future.
The orthotics by placing the bones of the feet in the best position biomechanically reduces pressure on the big toe joints and the surrounding joints, enabling the other foot joints to take some of the excess pressure. By relieving the pressure, it significantly reduces the risk of the bunions getting worse.
